The 350 Boorloo Perth team has been working hard over the past month on our campaign to keep Scarborough gas in the ground.

This dirty fossil gas project would release 1.69 billion tonnes of carbon pollution into the atmosphere, threaten endangered marine species and destroy Aboriginal Cultural Heritage. We cannot allow this destructive project to go ahead!

If you have been meaning to get more involved, or the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report on climate change has invoked anger and fear that you want to catalyse into action, then make sure you fill out our form to join our campaign.

Check out what we have been up to over the past month and see how you can get involved!

‘No Need for Scarborough Gas’ Strategy Meeting

Volunteers at the 350 Boorloo Perth Strategy Meeting

.

When it comes to planning our campaigns, we need to ensure that we are as strategic as possible to ensure that we have an impact and are able to reach our objectives – and ultimate goal of preventing Scarborough gas from going ahead!

At our strategy meeting on the 15th of July we used campaign tools to analyse the issue of Scarborough gas and figure out how we can best leverage the power of community organising to undermine the social license of this project.

.

One of our roles and strengths as a grassroots group campaigning on climate is that we are able to adapt quickly to changing conditions. It is likely that we will need to hold another strategy meeting after BHP and Woodside announce their half-year results on the 17th and 18th of August respectively, as this could impact our current strategy of targeting BHP as the company most likely to wind down the Scarborough project.

If you’d like to receive regular campaign updates and invitations to these meetings, please email us at perth@350.org.au.

BHP – No Need for Scarborough Gas Postcard Action
You may have seen emails from us promoting our latest tactic – the postcards calling on BHP to drop Scarborough gas by not signing off on this project.

350 Boorloo Perth and Fossil Free UWA have been running stalls in the community and on the university campus to get thousands of postcards signed.

Have you signed our digital postcard action yet?

Make sure you also share the digital postcard on social media.

On Tuesday the 17th of August at 10am, we will be meeting at the back of the BHP offices in Brookfield Place to rally against BHP’s involvement in the Scarborough gas project. Here we will be presenting the thousands of postcards signed by folks who don’t want this destructive project to go ahead.

It is important that we have a substantial turnout to show BHP, Woodside and other potential investors or stakeholders that there is broad community opposition to this project.

Woodside and BHP Wednesdays

Some of the crowd outside Woodside HQ for Woodside Wednesday, 21 July

Every fortnight we hold a protest outside the offices of Woodside or BHP to maintain a presence and keep community pressure on the companies to drop Scarborough gas.

This is an opportunity to receive campaign updates, hear from local community groups about why there’s no need for Scarborough gas, as well as engage with staff and the public on this issue.

The next Woodside Wednesday will take place outside Woodside HQ on the 18th of August, on the day that Woodside will announce their half-year results.

We will be hearing from the Socialist Alliance about Woodside’s human rights abuses, from Myanmar to East Timor, and why focusing on climate justice is so critical to this movement.

Scarborough Action Sessions & Welcome Webinars

Phone banking at the last Scarborough Action Session

In July we started running Scarborough Action Sessions every second Thursday evening, to come together as a group in a social setting (great company and pizza provided!) and take action on the campaign.

At these sessions you can learn new skills, meet some wonderful like-minded people and make a difference to the campaign to keep Scarborough gas in the ground for a safe climate future.

Our next Scarborough Action Session will be on the 26th of August. If you’re keen to join us, please fill out the volunteer form.

For those who would like more of a formal introduction to the No Need for Scarborough Gas campaign before getting involved, we are also running monthly welcome webinars on Zoom. This is a great entry point for you if you would like more information before joining our campaign.

If you would like to join our next Welcome Webinar on the 8th of September, keep an eye on the 350 Boorloo Perth Facebook page for event updates.

August Welcome Webinar

As you can see, there is plenty to get involved with and there is a role for everyone in this campaign! We would love to see you get involved. We need all hands on deck to create a social movement powerful enough to take on the fossil fuel industry and turn the tide for climate action in Australia.

We look forward to having you join us.
